The latest addition to Citrus City Records‘ impressive roster is Nashville, Tennessee native Kelton Young (aka Dream Wave). The small tape label re-released his newest full-length, Missing Home, earlier this week, with physical copies to be shipped out at the New Year. Young’s Dream Wave alias presents a range of melancholy lo-fi soundscapes, from crisp acoustic indie to buzzy slacker rock. True to its name, the eight-track release is a moody, deeply nostalgic record with a vaguely tumultuous edge.
Originally released in August, the soothing melodies and vexed guitar riffs of Missing Home sound better suited for cold winds and off-white skies. It’s a vibe established early on during the oceanic lull of EP opener “She’s Already Moved On,” culminating with the instrumental closing number “Missing Home.” Here, the production sounds fuller and more focused than anything else on the record, a tense rock jam that tapers out to a delicately humming guitar line. His emotional honesty and dynamic songwriting recall the likes of Alex G and Mal Devisa, two guitar-wielding artists with a similar potential for greatness.
