Couros makes the kind of richly-layered electronic music that goes as well on the dancefloor as it does the bedroom. The British producer, whose identity still remains a mystery, recently signed to Universal Music imprint PMR Records following the release of only two songs, “Cold Feet” and “Turning.” However, listening to his sonically-rich new EP, Jupiter, it quickly becomes clear what the label saw in the forward-thinking producer.
On opening track “Breathe A·gain,” Couros demonstrates his ability to make a dancefloor-ready pop smash with pulsing beats and meaty synths. Proving that he’s more than just a one-trick pony, the multi-talented artist also takes this opportunity to flex his vocal chops, lending his husky, yet soulful pipes to the track. This theme continues on the third track, “Ne·ver Break,” which sees Couros combine elements of electronica and pop to create a beautifully-challenging crossover hit.
To close out the EP, Couros returns to the slow sonic swell of his earlier work, which is often compared to that of his labelmate, SG Lewis. Like the rest of the record, “Cir·cles” is a seriously intoxicating body of work that demonstrates the power of simplicity and the emotional energy it can create. If nothing else, it helps establish Couros as one of the year’s most promising names in electronic music.
Here’s to hoping there’s more where this came from in the year ahead…
