Donna Missal has a powerful new two-track single out this month titled “Thrills.” Missal’s “Thrills” opens like an evening spent in a dimmed lounge, all blue velvet and smoke in your eyes. She opens with the line “I blow my mind/ get so gone sometimes/ come on strong,” and then, aptly, she comes on strong. Her vocals are sultry and alluring, building over a driving bass line that continuously ups the stakes, and she antes every time.
Simultaneously evocative of jazz and blues singers past and pop stars of the now, “Thrills” is a helluva track. The Live from Capitol Studios recording is stunning in its simplicity and its display of Missal’s technique. The pared down recording is perhaps even more narcotic, her soul made apparent with every hit note and faded missive. Missal’s full-length debut will be out on Harvest Records, but in the meantime this release is undeniably good.
In 2005 the Acting Governor of New Jersey asked state residents to vote for a new tourism slogan, one of which was New Jersey: The Real Deal. The state has a rich history of turning out female vocalists, (see Karen O, Whitney Houston, SZA, Halsey, etc.) and Donna is no exception. As a listener, I’m all in, going for broke and betting against the house as she belts, “And my love is real / you know the deal / feels like a nosedive / head shot gaslight low rise / double time overdose relapse kill shit / my love is real yeah / take it like a pill / just for the thrill.”
