New Orleans-via-New York producer Dylan Seals is one of a handful of musicians that have emerged out of NOLA’s slowly growing electronic music scene in recent years. Like many of his contemporaries, Seals is a bedroom producer in the truest sense of the word, recording dark, downtempo beats with only a laptop and one of the few instruments he has at his disposal. Earlier this year, we featured the producer’s heavy, rumbling electronic joint “Better” on our site after an unlikely trip to Seals’ alma mater. Since then, he’s honed his skills and refined his sound with a handful of loosies and a new three-track EP aptly titled, 3.
Released earlier this month, the EP is a mellow and spacial collection of songs that drift between hip-hop, electronic and R&B. On opening track “Turquoise,” Seals explores the far reaches of R&B together with fellow Loyola University New Orleans alum, Kayla Mims, who lends her breathless vocals to the track. The EP’s second track “How Are You” moves to an entirely different beat, recalling the dark and subdued nature of his earlier works. However, it’s on the third and final track, “Place,” that all of these influences coalesce. A collaborative effort between Seals, Camille Lummis and Alex Szotak, the song is a mesmerizing yet eerie mix of broken beats, swelling synths and haunting vocals; the perfect song to round up a brilliant EP from one of electronic music’s most promising stars.
