What's This?

Yesterday, while at a Christmas party/friend’s birthday/eventual shitshow, a friend of mine recommended I listen to Montreal-based groove-rock ensemble Busty and the Bass. Despite my best attempts to dismiss their suggestion as simply an appeal to my love of music discovery and recent affinity for horns, they assured me that their recommendation was rock-solid. Taking them at their word, I decided to listen to the group’s Soundcloud page earlier this morning, secretly hoping that my objections would hold out. But, to my initial displeasure and subsequent excitement, all my doubts were laid to rest.

“Runnin’,” the group’s latest collaboration with Toronto-based duo Free n Losh, is a thoughtful blend of electronic and jazz. Combing Free n Losh’s simple electronic production with Busty and the Bass’ swelling horns and lead-singer Nick Ferraro’s silky smooth vocals, it more than lives up to my expectations. It also happens to be a remarkably festive-sounding record, making it a perfect addition to those Christmas playlists we’re all scrambling to put together. Listen below.
