What's This?

Knxwledge and Anderson .Paak‘s NxWorries project samples underground Brazilian soul legend Cassiano for their single “Link Up.” “Onda” is impossibly smooth, a sleek progressive funk-soul effort that’s irresistibly good. The dedicated vocal melody and bass line from the 1977 cut is looped, dropped a few keys and blanketed in distortion on “Link Up.” Cassiano’s “Onda” was included on the most recent mixtape by Toronto’s NEEDS&WANTS. Download it here.

Wax Poetics wrote about the obscure soul single four years back: “[Cassiano]’s routinely referred to as a founding father of Brazilian soul music—he bounced from RCA to Odeon to Polydor for his three solo albums, defying categorization, as song-to-song he touched on MPB, sweet soul, funk, and even psych rock.”
