Cosima Jaala’s soulful, punky, serpentine guitar music stole our hearts when we first heard her demos on Soundcloud in 2015–we’ve been consistently floored by every effort she’s produced since. Last year, Jaala dropped a devastatingly beautiful song called “Junior Spirit,” a one-off single that followed the released of her first full-length, Hard Hold.
This week Jaala announced her new album Joonya Spirit, to be released on Bedroom Suck Records in Australia and Captured Tracks in the US. The record’s lead single “Horn” is out now, and it’s some of the best music we’ve heard all year. Meditating on the difficult emotional labor of removing yourself from a lover, Jaala sings over jerky, fitful chord progressions that collapse and re-create at will. It’s a restless sensation that quickly becomes hypnotic, like the special kind of crazy comes with love. Listen to “Horn” below, and pre-order Joonya Spirit, out April 20, here.
