What's This?

Two months ago, the guitar outfit Jaala hit the the studio to record their debut album Hard Hold. Save for the two-year-old experimental folk sketch “littlebiddylove,” the entirety of their SoundCloud output has been made up of live demos–from the melancholic math rock of “Warsong” to the feisty blues shuffle of “Order.” The Melbourne, Australia based trio have toured with neighboring talents like the the future-funk mastermind Kirkis and are currently prepping to play dates around Australia in August with neo-soul juggernauts Hiatus Kaiyote and . The influence of such musical peers is evident on tracks like the stealthily hard-grooving “Double Dutch.” It’s a jazzy, evanescent kind of rock n’ roll that never settles too long on one idea, quick to ebb and flow to wayward, unanticipated directions. The anxiety is palpable when Cosima Jaala sings, “How you gonna make end’s meet? How you gonna make a wedding ring?” Everyone is getting married or some shit… The band writes in the description of the track. Something tells me it’d take a lot to wedlock these three brilliantly talented babes.
