Singer-songwriter Kadhja Bonet is L.A.’s reigning queen of throwback soul. Her debut, self-produced LP The Visitor–one of our favorite records of 2016–teased Kadhja Bonet’s peculiar vision of R&B, folk and jazz. These songs had a distinct, otherworldly-like quality to them, like vintage pop jams intercepted and reworked by alien lifeforms.
On “Mother Maybe,” the lead single from her forthcoming album Childqueen, Kadhja Bonet tones down the sci-fi imagery and sounds, focusing more on 70s-inspired progressive funk. It’s a tactical move for an artist hoping to discover new audiences, but we’re hoping the full-length record saves some of the weirdness that first made us fall in love with Kadhja. Listen to “Mother Maybe” below.
Childqueen is out June 8 on Fat Possum Records.
