What's This?

It’s been four years since Low Leaf shared AKASHAALAY, a fearlessly experimental pop album that made connections to the natural world and the artist’s Filipino heritage–described by some as “indigenous soul”. The multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer-songwriter has been working diligently to refine her sound, as proven by her forthcoming Fresh Selects project PRiMiTiVA. While in a world completely of its own, PRiMiTiVA echoes that of Los Angeles’ experimental soul and beat music scene (acts like Ras G, Sudan Archives and Flying Lotus). The six-track release shares an exciting new production style that’s cleaner, crazier and more sophisticated than Low Leaf’s past material. Low Leaf calls it “ancient electronica”.

IC is humbled to premiere the second single from Low Leaf’s PRiMiTiVA release. “InnerG” is a frenetic funk-soul jam that pairs live instrumentation with psychedelic electronic arrangements. Bryan Baker plays flute on the track, Aye Mitch! and Zeroh are credited as co-producers, but otherwise Low Leaf does everything on the track. She sings about reorienting the self on “InnerG,” finding the source of your energy (or inner gangster) and allowing it to flow from you like water. Listen via Spotify.

PRiMiTiVA is out October 25 via Fresh Selects. Listen to Low Leaf’s first single “Yah Yah” below.
