Montreal-based rapper and R&B singer Matthew Chaim‘s last single “Vanilla Ways,” was about the will for self-discovery. He wrote the lyrics in less than an hour. On his newest effort “Untitled,” constructed by Canadian producers and frequent collaborators Noah Barer and Cavewerk, Chaim showcases a clearer vision of what he’s capable of as a vocalist and lyricist.
The song was named “Untitled” because it’s about writing songs (“I don’t need tools/ And I don’t need a process I just need a feeling,” he sings on the track’s opening line) and possibly his relationship to songwriting as he’s matured. “How and why I write songs has changed drastically over the last year,” Chaim wrote in an email to me, “Mainly because I’ve been pushed to grow as a person and as a writer by those around me.”
