Brandon Wallace and Jeff Martinsen are Ola Sweet–a newly established band out of Boise, Idaho that make bluesy, weathered rock songs. Ola Sweet’s five-track Santiago EP is a damn good debut, showcasing the duo’s clear talent for crafting mesmeric tunes that feel equal parts heartfelt and haunted.
While Santiago echoes the country-inflected pop rock of Dawes along with the lo-fi grit of early Kings of Leon, the sweeping tenor of Ola Sweet’s vocalist cements the band’s authenticity. It’s as soulful as Nick Murphy (aka Chet Faker), as precisely powerful as Majical Cloudz‘ Devon Welsh, but also distinctly original.
The clear standout on the EP is opener “Big Sleep,” an eerily beautiful pop rock single that bears a remarkably timeless charm. The other four tracks are just as well conceived, picturesque rock Americana jams that will leave you utterly hooked.
