We’ve had the privilege and honor to track the burgeoning career of Nick Hakim and his dreamy, blissed-out soul songs for the better part of the last three years. Last Wednesday night, after a lengthy spring tour of North America supporting his debut full-length album, Nick headlined Bowery Ballroom for a thoroughly dope hometown show. The night’s performance captured the stark evolution of his live performance–from gossamer-thin lo-fi R&B to brilliant and boisterous soul-infused rock.
Opening up for Nick Hakim was ONYX Collective, Combo Chimbita, and Shawn Dub (Human Head Records, (where Nick Hakim used to work)). The unexpectedly funky ONYX ensemble is featured on Nick Hakim’s “Those Days” from his newly released record.
Nick gave his all for the headlining set, commanding the stage with simply astounding vocals and endearingly strange body movements. We know he can sang. But with Nick there’s always an urge to pull back, to restrain himself from exhibiting the full force of his voice. Call it modesty, call it deep appreciation for the music being performed around him: Regardless, it’s a marvel to witness, particularly in those rare moments when he manages to lose control.
