What's This?

The Nile Project is a massively ambitious musical endeavor that seeks to include a musician from every nation that the Nile River runs through. Conceived by Egyptian ethnomusicologist Mina Girgis and Ethiopian American singer Meklit Hadero in 2011, the collective of musicians released their first studio album, Jinja, last month. One the album’s longest, most sweeping tracks is “Dil Mahbuby,” a collaboration between master oud player Mohamed Abozekry and singer/multi-instrumentalist Dina El Wedidi. The two Egyptian artists take their time building suspense across the nearly 11-minute long track, ultimately directing their cool, hypnotic groove to a frantic intensity. Listen below.

Jinja is out on Spotify now. Buy it on Bandcamp here. Watch The Nile Project perform for KEXP.
