“It’s a funny tune in a way,” SBTRKT‘s Aaron Jerome chuckles, “It’s quite exciting for me.” Yeah. Maybe a bit of an understatement. The lead single from the prolific electronic producer’s forthcoming sophomore album Wonder Where We Land, “NEW DORP. NEW YORK,” which employs the native urbanite Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend vocal duties, is sure to evoke divisive reactions among fans of both collaborators. I myself spent the first two days following its release completely and utterly stupefied.
Something about this new SBTRKT title feels unnatural and weird, an occurrence only common in alternate, fictional universes or sepia-toned episodes of the Twilight Zone. But the initial oddity wears thin with time. Several listens in and energized visions of “gargoyles gargling oil” are illuminated, disorienting layers of titillating synths and calamitous bass incursions threaten to subsume you entirely. Koenig’s chirping alto sounds best distorted: a low-voiced and menacingly wry alter-ego that commands a barrage of psychotropic, dystopian noises. “NEW DORP. NEW YORK.” hits fast and hard. Adorned with glorious, I-don’t-give-a-fuck overtones, the single embraces all things eccentric and ghastly, an ambitious and full-figured tune that pays proper homage to the urban jungle.
