What's This?

Brooklyn’s experimental soul group Space Captain just dropped their highly anticipated In Memory EP, which has already received a ton of love from the UK thanks to their Brighton-based label Tru Thoughts. The five-track release moves beyond the simple, funk-driven neo soul of previous tracks like “Easier” to heavier, headier territories. A-side joints “Screams” and “Landing / Up In The Hills” are noisy and restless, edging toward a kind of densely arranged experimentalism that calls to mind Kirkis. and Flying Lotus. The B-side relinquishes some of those anxieties with moody, lulling melodies by vocalist Maralisa Simmons-Cook. These juxtaposing energies collide best on EP centerpiece “Cosmos,” a surging, jazz-fusion take on astral-tinged R&B.
