I first heard Luke Titus Sangerman on an acid comedown, laying into some serious boom bap grooves behind Chicago’s excellent groove rock ensemble Woo Park. On his new solo project TITUS, the talented youngblood showcases his skills beyond drumming: The newly released cosmicdrama mixtape features TITUS rapping, singing, and playing bass, guitar and keys over eclectic, sample-based productions. The 27-minute sound collage also includes additional support from Parker Grogan, Luc Parcell, Donoven Brown and Woo Park bandmate Brian Sanborn.
cosmicdrama is a surreal, stream of conscious-style workout of experimental R&B, jazz, soul and hip-hop. Similar to left-leaning, beat-focused musicians Kirkis. and Knxwledge, TITUS exercises little to no creative restraint throughout the mixtape’s intoxicating length, often transitioning to new tracks just as the groove has been properly established. It’s a cool, complicated trip.
