What's This?

Topaz Jones just set the tone for 2018 with the sheer force of two incredible new singles: “TOOTHACHE” and “ZOOM”. Repping Montclair, New Jersey, the relentlessly good singer-songwriter sets the vibe on his tracks–2016’s ARCADE LP gracefully traversed a wide range genres and styles–but these newest joints are in a league of their own.

“TOOTHACHE” is a fucking bop, a reverent and exhilarating tribute to Prince, Parliament and James Brown, an instant classic dance track in the fashion of Marvin Gaye‘s “Got To Give It Up.” There’s a party in the room. Amidst hoots and hollering, a female vocalist (possibly Topaz’s auntie) commands us to “Get up off yo ass” in the track’s intro. And when Topaz’s energetic first verse drops, the party becomes completely lit.

B-side “ZOOM” flips the whole feel, dons a fresh new look. If you weren’t familiar with Topaz Jones you might think was a completely different artist. “ZOOM” is a tightly wound R&B-trap jam that feels years ahead of its time.

Bump Topaz Jones’ ARCADE.
