What's This?

When Minneapolis-based indie-pop outfit On An On announced their “indefinite hiatus” last Spring, we were disappointed to say the least. Having only just caught wind of the band, their unexpected departure left us feeling high and dry. With so much still left unsaid, the band’s drummer Mike Gunvalson began his journey into the world of songwriting, leaving behind his sticks and picking up a guitar in their place. Now, almost a year since his departure from the band, Gunvalson has reemerged with the announcement of his new project, Val Son, and a handful of tracks to boot.

Today, we are pleased to premiere the band’s sun-drenched new single, “Town,” the first of five new tracks from Gunvalson and co.’s forthcoming EP, Miracles. As its name would suggest, the track captures “the strangeness of simply being from a place - town, city or wherever – and the identity and insularity that inspires for some and doesn’t inspire for others,” says Gunvalson. With influences ranging from Tom Petty to the Smashing Pumpkins, the band wear their influences proudly on their sleeve. From those first few hits of harmonica to the twang of guitar, “Town” reads like a lesson in writing modern Americana.
