Last week AKAI SOLO dropped 2GALES, an ambitious and deeply immersive project from a virtually unknown New York City MC. Written and arranged to play both backwards and forwards, this 18-track album is also divided into two smaller 9-track projects, 2GALES SUN and 2GALES MOON. The concept of duality runs through Akai’s raps and productions, with pairs of songs built around the same sample but executed in remarkably distinct ways.
2GALES is framed as an observation and critique of his life and his trade. In doing so Akai succeeds at cultivating an authentic attitude, describing and embodying the feel and blow of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. While the record certainly seems to pick up where RATKING‘s So It Goes and Earl‘s I Don’t Like Shit left off, Akai is in a league entirely of his own.
Tracks we love: “Appointment In Ghana”, “Boundless”, “Pass Pounds”
