If you’ve been waiting for Peter Bjorn and John‘s return as long as we have, you’re probably curious to know what the trio’s been up to. While the group recently shared a remix of Yoko Ono‘s “Mrs. Lennon,” its members—Peter Morén, Björn Yttling and John Eriksson—have all pursued solo careers, lending the occasional hand to fellow INGRID affiliates. Unlike his bandmates, though, Yttling is the only member to assume a full-time role in another project.
A collective effort between Yttling, Shout Out Loud‘s Bebban Stenborg and a multi-instrumentalist simply known as Smash, Astropol is Sweden’s latest and arguably greatest supergroup. Equal parts melancholic and uplifting, the band’s debut album, The Spin We’re In, released at the tail-end of 2015, sees each member bring something of their own to the table: Stenborg with her soft and sullen vocals, Yttling and Smash with their dreamy sonic productions.
Together, the group create a cold, but intoxicating fusion of Scandi-pop that’s both familiar and unique. Although some of tracks call to mind the barren landscape of Sweden, their sound is still very much vibrant; albeit, certainly not in the typical sense of the word. Full of hazy guitars, crisp electronic drums and shivering synths, The Spin We’re In walks that careful line between romance and heartbreak. It’s the perfect record for listeners that like their pop music with a little substance.
