What's This?

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and electronic musician Anna Wise first made a name for herself as one half of the experimental R&B/pop duo Sonnymoon, before she linked up with Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar to provide lyrics and vocals for his good kid, m.A.A.d city and To Pimp A Butterfly albums. This year Anna is dropping her first solo project. She teased unreleased material during her January residency at Brooklyn venue C’Mon Everybody (one of which gigs saw her performing with “These Walls” cohort Bilal), and now “Precious Possession” is the first official taste of what’s in store.

“Blank slate, big smile, nice pout, long hair/ Tone bod, big legs, full breasts, blank stare,” Wise sings in a droll, conversational tone, “We’ve learned that this is what you want/ We can’t erase what we’ve been taught.” This slinky, sexy, possibly satirical R&B number–along with many of the other new songs she’s previewed live–takes notes from the spaced-out soul power of Kimbra and the beguiling trip-hop of FKA twigs.
