Meet Aristophanes 貍貓, a Taiwanese female rapper who spits in Mandarin Chinese. According to The Fader, she’s meant to feature on Grimes‘ long-awaited fourth LP. Sporting an unconventional flow, this MC has worked with footwork and experimental hip-hop producers like TangrenTi and Foodman, Aristophanes has acquired a moderate but modest following, one which is sure to swell following the release of Grimes’ forthcoming untitled album. On her newest offering, the first new upload in nearly a year, Aristophanes collaborates with a Lidly, who also worked on “桃 The Peach Blossom.” It’s called “左右為難 Left And Right.” The tracks picks up with a lethargic haze of trumpet, piano, and lagged drum machines. When Aristophanes takes the mic, the track takes on a new edge–strange, maniacal, and slightly perturbed, an odd sensation to experience when listening to reprogrammed jazz. But nearly everything about Aristophanes is odd. It’s what makes her so immediately appealing.
