For nearly a decade, Balmorhea have captivated listeners with their beautiful and cinematic masterpieces. In only eight years, the six-piece ensemble (led by Rob Lowe and Michael Muller) have treated us to five impressive albums, but while that’s enough music to keep any avid fan satisfied for a lifetime–Lowe and Muller aren’t about to call it quits. In late-October they will issue a re-mastered version of their debut album, accompanied with a new 7” HEIR. Those of you keeping tabs on the band might have noticed that Western Vinyl released the single’s A-side last month, but as is usually the case, the B-side proves to be much more enterprising—and, in this case, breathtaking.
“HEIR II,” the aptly titled B-side, is a gorgeous arrangement of strings, horns and percussions. Structurally, though, this isn’t your typical post-rock epic. The song is devoid of any unsightly feedback or barreling guitar work; instead, Balmorhea employ a bevy of beautiful instrumentals, making for a rich and natural-sounding soundscape.
