Never has a Chrome Sparks track sounded more tantalizing than this. “Losing U,” the first original track the Ann Arbor-native has given us in nearly two months, is sonically different than any of his past work. Teased out for nearly three and half minutes, this slow-moving display of smokey synths and haunting atmospherics, sees Malvin taking a more straight-forward approach to his music.
At a point, those deep, amorous vocals remind me of that severely-modulated vocal clip on Caribou‘s “Can’t Do Without You,” while the celestial synths make me believe Malvin has wandered into Tycho territory—a place he doesn’t often venture. Whether or not he’s taken production cues from Dan Snaith or Scott Hansen, I’m not entirely sure. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from listening to “Losing U,” it’s that Chrome Sparks knows how to make one helluva’ blissed-out electronic tune.
