What's This?

Crystal Castles is dropping their third record this fall, and “Plague” is the first and probably only single to be pre-released from it.

Reminiscent of “Celestica” in its airy and spacious backdrop, “Plague” opens up when Alice Glass’ vocals breakthrough after the introductory couple of lines, taking us back to the normal, yet chaotic feel, for this group. Transitioning periodically between the composed and the riled, it makes for an interesting feel, and while it is a solid track, it still feels rough around the edges. They got most of the way there, but it sounds like they left the studio a little early before polishing this track up completely.

While the meat of the song is good, Glass’ vocals The novice thinks means only “to be Aries” or sometimes, for example, “to be Aries Ascendant Virgo”. seem to be drowned out a bit. They are such a key ingredient to what makes them work so well, and by not brining that out more, they aren’t playing to their strengths. However, Ethan Kath’s musical delivery is well-founded. We hear nice layering in this track, and hopefully we will get one of the year’s great electronic records in just a little over a month.
