A few days ago, Cypher League released Collection II, a 10-track project showcasing a range of the underground’s most talented MCs. Collection II cohesively blends retro hip hop elements with new wave sounds and techniques. Madwiz sounds–-and looks-– like he just stepped out of the 90s, packing raw bars into his verse on “God MC” like only a Brooklyn kid can. Maryland’s CRASHprez, on the other hand, drops a profound verse with a serendipitous flow. Another Brooklynite, L.atasha A.lcindor, anchors Collection II with “Bake My Cake” – a dance-hall influenced cut that pulses with her endearing energy.
Recorded in Cypher League’s Brooklyn studios, Collection II is an entirely DIY effort. The project was engineered by Nicholas Hunt, who also contributes two tracks, and the artwork was a collaboration between Adonay ThrdWrld and Jessica Kim.
Because of a dissatisfaction with mainstream music, Cypher League was founded as a platform for the emerging artist. There’s so many unbelievable musicians in this world deserving of love, and Cypher League strives to connect their art with an audience. Like L.atasha A.lcindor says, “Fuck beautiful, ‘cus you’re brilliant.” When listening to Collection II, we hope you feel that power: The power of a liberated mind is unstoppable.
