What's This?

Something that the indie music community can agree on is that music collaborations between two respected artists is a rarity, and that does not mean it is even necessarily good. Well the stars will align come September 11th, 2012, for Talking Heads powerhouse David Byrne and Annie Clark of St. Vincent will release Love This Giant (through 4AD) after two and a half years of work on it. Each of the aforementioned artists are deserving of our attention, so we can only expect wonders of LTG, especially since in Clark’s own words, “It’s an honest-to-god, straight-down-the-middle thing. He wrote music, I wrote music; he wrote words, I wrote words. He sings half the songs, I wrote half the songs.” Of the twelve songs of the record, ten were a joint effort, while the other two were written by each musician separately.

There are lists and lists of failed collaborations, so even Love This Giant should not be given the benefit of the doubt here. Until you hear the first single, “Who.” Maybe it’s a biased point of view, but its everything you could want from these two. It has trademark energy and quirkiness of a Talking Heads song, and the fluidity of a St. Vincent track, along with Annie’s brilliant vocals. The tempo of the song, by use of echos and horns, make bobbing your head just feel natural. This collision of sound makes for a fine predecessor to a highly anticipated album.
