In the world of mashups, the end product usually sounds absolutely amazing or is downright terrible. “Stay” is one of the latest creations from Bryce McMurray, better know as DJ Topsider, and the track manages to stay somewhere in between. The self-anointed “Rick Ross of mashups” masterfully blends together CHVRCHES track “Recover” with Monsieur Adi‘s laid-back remix of Lana Del Rey‘s “Born To Die.” However, the inclusion of Taylor Swift‘s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and the amount of focus paid to the song, is quite puzzling.
There is no denying DJ Topsider has a knack for producing mashups that are seamlessly layered and beautifully crafted. “Stay” definitely puts a lot of these talents on full display. Minimally altered vocals fall perfectly over the instrumentals throughout the track producing a nice overall sound. Even though the first half of the song leans lyrically towards Swift, the majority of “Stay” rides on the back of a gorgeous CHVRCHES tempo and there is nothing wrong with that. Like “Stay,” DJ Topsider has plenty more solid offerings including, “Far Away” and “Neon,” both of which cross between indie and pop music with ease. Oh, and did I mention he just recently mashed-up Earl Sweatshirt and James Blake?!
