Djembe Jones are a dope new four-piece out of Takoma Park, Maryland–the newest in a trend of hip-hop/rock fusion acts like Anderson .Paak and L.A. transplant YEEK. Their debut EP, DJOANIN, wins at establishing a deftly unique sound, one that’s rich and multi-faceted, hopelessly unpredictable.
The record’s first proper track, “UGMFU,” is a clear standout among these hazy, trap-infused rock jams, a summer song for the ages. “You got me fucked up,” the gang croon in not-so perfect harmony, adding to the track’s languid, beachside vibes: This joint is R&B/pop-rock bliss.
The last two tracks on the EP, “Nowhere” and “Fine,” take on groovy, Afro-pop rhythms that add another level of complexity to this cultural amalgam of sounds, a clear product of the band’s collective range in taste and skill. Guest spots on the record include Nafets, Kasey Jones, Burns Twins, Camila Ortiz, and McKenna Murr.
