Pat Grossi, the new wave soloist of Active Child, returns from his 2011 debut You Are All I See with his new single “Evening Ceremony.” The electronic, shoegaze artist’s rise to fame coincided with a tour opening for M83 as well as providing song material for Ellie Goulding‘s “Hanging On” on Halycon. This new track retains all of his original, somber tone but ventures beyond his previous aesthetic constraints and experiments with 80s synth, harp instrumentation, and vocals that echo the passion and technical control of pop legends like Prince and Michael Jackson. The song itself challenges ideas of pop music. Lyrically, compositionally, and artistically, “Evening Ceremony” declares itself pop, but in the same respect it exudes an incredible amount of authenticity — something you’ll rarely hear on the radio.
