Today, James Blake announced his sophomore record, Overgrown. He also offered up the project’s first single, “Retrograde,” which has been floating around the internet in the form of live recordings for a little while now. The track is built around a looped vocal line and a slow, stomping rhythm, showcasing Blake‘s often under-appreciated vocal prowess. The product is probably the most conventional slow-jam Blake has ever put out, yet he retains the warped melancholy he has come to be known for (and loved for). We think “Retrograde” is fantastic and long-overdue, another huge step towards James Blake‘s inevitable superstardom. Listen to the radio rip from Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 down below:
