We’ve been head over heels for Ehiorobo‘s electrifying R&B music since his 2016 project Limeade–released four months before Beyoncé‘s newest solo album Lemonade (FYI). For his newest nine-track effort, a furnace in the coin fountain, Ehiorobo dons an unfamiliar alias as Tsar of Gamble. The freshly conceived moniker grants the New Jersey-based solo act an unbridled sense of creative freedom, allowing the singer-songwriter and producer to make tracks that stray far from his pop-savvy efforts as Ehiorobo.
Tsar of Gamble raps, croons and rambles over a chaotic pandemonium of meticulously layered self-produced beats. His soaring hooks and cleverly arranged verses are just about the only thing to hint at his past work as Ehiorobo. All else leans toward a darker, more muddied expression of hip-hop R&B. It brings out a fresh, psychedelic style from this already seasoned soloist.
