Only a few days before embarking on a European tour with fellow bedroom producer XXYYXX, chillwave giant Giraffage gives listeners a final song before his month-and-a-half long departure. With “Money,” Giraffage leaves America with a goodbye present that contains familiar elements and a suggestion of change in musical direction.
Many of Giraffage’s recognizable staples are featured on this track: water droplet synths, shimmering sounds of nature and repeated vocal samples create the glistening aura he’s known for. The chorus, however possesses something no other Giraffage song has: a drop. Rest assured, this drop isn’t an overly aggressive slur of noises that has become so common, but a surprisingly chill, bottom heavy nod at post-dubstep. “Money” then continues on to cycle back and forth, often sporadically, between the cushion of elegant sounds and the menacing, trembling bass sections. Whether this track is a hint of a new sound or simply a one-time deal, Giraffage has shown that his musical exploration is far from over. “Das, das, d-d-das what’s up.”
