What's This?

Three months ago, the Brooklyn based funk outfit IGBO (or Indigo Green Brown Orange) released a hugely impressive, semi-self-titled EP. It’s an ambitious yet firmly retro-stylized debut, a seamless collage of 1970s instrumental soul, proto-funk, and big band groove music. On their scorching hot single “Gimmie Gimmie,” the first number with lyrics on the six-track EP, vocals by 10ille, Lorely Rodriguez, Denitia Odigie, and Jypsy Jeyfree are offered to beef up the jovial, soul-stomping vamp. Buried under the densely layered polyrhythms and heady, body-moving melodies is the blueprint of Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up,” but IGBO’s contribution to the soul tradition is singular and profound, wholly unique in its approach to seducing the listener. Hear it below!
