I have a natural aversion to lyric videos. Generally, they only serve to extort and disvalue music, to perpetuate the vicious cycle of corporatization and commercialization that has plagued the music industry. But the lyric video released for Jaded Inc‘s “Coconut Sofa” made me look past my qualms. The video, directed and edited by Henry DeMaio, features lyric snippets from this snappy, salacious dance groove in the form of tattooed ink designed by Jennie Nusbaum. But, even more compelling than this visual aid, is the song itself. Jaded Inc is a collaborative project pairing neo-soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne and rapper-producer 14KT, who both hail from Michigan and share a common affinity for early 80s new wave and Booty music. “Coconut Sofa,” the group’s debut single, is self-described as beat wave, a confounding synthesis of weary hip-hop rhythms and boisterous synths, masterfully directed by the Hawthorne’s slippery-smooth vocals. Their debut album The Big Knock drops June 17.
