James Vincent McMorrow - Cavalier

It’s about time! After teasing us with a trailer of his new album Post Tropical last week, James Vincent McMorrow has emerged out of whatever cave he’s been hiding in with a chilling, R&B ballad. Yes, you did hear that correctly: Chilling. R&B. Ballad — three words you don’t typically associate with a name like McMorrow‘s. Nevertheless, it’s a real showstopper. When he gave us a preview of what was to come last week, we didn’t actually expect the folk fixture to follow through with his intended plan — but I guess we were wrong. Cutting through the cold, desolate backdrop like a knife is McMorrow‘s glorious falsetto. As it cascades down the front of this poignant single, there’s not a crack in his voice or a breath to be had, just one elongated howl. If he was looking to get jaw-dropping response, he has certainly hit his mark.
