Repping the Brisbane, Australia based independent label Soul Has No Tempo with their first-ever official release, the burgeoning neo-soul singer-songwriter Jordan Rakei dropped the Groove Curse EP as his debut collection of original material. Also hailing from Brisbane, the R&B musician and vocalist might be considered of the post-Voodoo era D’Angelo school of recording artists, mirroring the swaggering heavy-soul of similar artists like Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Nick Hakim, and Abhi//Dijon. The fourth track on Groove Curse, “Alright,” is a vibey, sexy, jazz-laden, feel-good jam, rooted in the analogue integrity of soul music. “Sunlight and you hold me as I breathe/ It’s the summertime, ’cause I’m blowin’ through the breeze,” Rakei sings in a skillful flurry of melismatic phrasings. And the technical abilities of his voice are right on par with the music supporting it. Stream Jordan Rakei’s Groove Curse EP below.
