London’s Jordan Rakei began his career in Brisbane, ushering in a new wave Australian soul music alongside acts like Hiatus Kaiyote. In the two years since his move, Rakei has considerably expanded his sound, embracing genres and styles that exist far beyond the comfort of R&B or soul music (The jittery, progressive jazz single “Talk To Me” was written as a Latin Samba number). It’s this evolution that makes his debut album, Cloak, an immersive, impeccable masterpiece, which dropped today via Soul Has No Tempo and 4101 Records. He sings about self-realization, ego, meditation and romance in ways that are genuine and evocative, telling the story of man coming of age and aspiring for a sound mind.
