What's This?

Earlier this month, Kelela dropped her hotly anticipated Hallucinogen EP, her first official release since 2013’s Cut 4 Me mixtape. The six-track EP puts a more sophisticated spin on the icy, UK-inspired future grime of her previous material. These new songs are more subtle and, consequently, less challenging, but her clever embracement of a mainstream integrity does much to elevate her sound. Tracks like “A Message,” the first Hallucinogen single, and “Rewind” tap into the same magic that made Kelela’s initial debut so damn exhilarating, daring for darkness and reaching for experimentation without ever fully leaving the domain of pop. But it’s Hallucinogen‘s fourth track “All The Way Down” that really takes the cake. Kelela recently told The Fader that this song is about “abandoning unnecessary rules and focusing on things that do matter when it comes to relationships.” Stream the sleek, sexy-smart trap banger.
