Still combatting an egregiously delayed album, Azealia Banks is rumored to release her major label debut Broke With Expensive Taste via Sony early next year. The lead single from the new album, the collision course electro house of “Chasing Time,” leaked an hour ago on the Azealia Banks web SoundCloud page. It’s a high-fidelity studio version, which makes me think this leak was strategic and purposeful on behalf of the controversy-ridden rapper-vocalist. The single is much more radio-friendly than previous self-released singles like “Yung Rapunxel” and “Heavy Metal and Reflective,” which were completely ensconced by elements of the dystopian, lethal shards of industrial grime electronica. “Chasing Time” is positively upbeat and motivational, an only slightly self-galvanizing dancehall banger with a warbling, hiccuping backing track of squishy-sharp synthlines.
