What's This?

Black Balloons” is easily one of my favourite songs by Local Natives, so when I heard that a couple of Los Angeles-based DJs had flipped the original on its head, I initially had my doubts—and, truthfully, I didn’t think they could make it work. Thankfully, though, my worst fears were laid to rest when I heard what Lost Kings had done with it.

Progressive-house and indie-rock may lay at opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but like anything music related, no combination is out of the question. Robert Gainley and Dr. No, collectively known as Lost Kings, are intent on closing the divide between these two genres, and with remixes like this, they are making a great deal of headway.

Following remixes of Ellie Goulding and Galantis (amongst others), the duo made their first foray into indie-rock with a relatively tame remix of The Killers‘ “Human.” Beginning where they left off, the duo return with a constructive, and seemingly sensible, remix for “Black Balloons.”

Armed with a mixer, the duo bring a number of crowd-pleasing, but tasteful, house nuances to the original. Although it has all the markings of progressive-house—sweeping synths, smooth chord progressions and roof-raising drops—this rather unorthodox remix may be the only thing that helps hipsters and ravers find common ground (aside from that new Porter Robinson album, of course).
