This latest release from hot-commodity Mark Johns is sweet without the saccharine. Heavy tropical vibes play out through a lush vocal landscape in this short cut featuring Brooklyn-based duo Brasstracks. “5 South” captures the feelings of movement, ephemerality and immediacy, all held up against a backtrack of heavy bass, wobbling synths and elegantly punctual horn sections produced by Alexander Lewis. The song, released on the same day Mark Johns turned 21, is a brilliant “oasis, sanctuary.”
