What's This?

Miquela is a mystery, a high concept experiment in pop star branding and online visual representation. She also makes really dope tunes–as shown by her newly released pair of singles “Over You” and “Not Mine”. The enigmatic artist gained notoriety through her expertly curated Instagram page @lilmiquela, which features a stunningly life-like CGI avatar and has cultivated nearly 300,000 followers. The avatar extends to every aspect of Miquela’s internet presence, from press pics to single artworks.

Despite its artificial concept, Miquela is hardly a publicity stunt. She uses her platform to bring up real-world, politicized issues like Black Lives Matter and DACA. The avatar–as provocative as it might appear–mainly serves to distance the art from the artist, in the same way West coast rapper Leikeli47 uses a baclava and R&B star H.E.R uses her silhouette to maintain anonymity. It’s a growing necessity in pop music, a move meant to eliminate some of the pressures female artists are faced with.

Listen to Miquela’s two new bangin singles below, and bump an official remix by ANAMANAGUCHI.
