New York City’s Tobias is one of our new favorite solo acts, a musician who’s been honing his ambient R&B productions for the better part of the last few years. His music recalls the likes Shlohmo, Boards of Canada, Ricky Eat Acid and King Krule, nebulous and serene instrumentals that feel intimate and deeply personal. Watch the visual for “Side B,” the second half of Tobias’ self-titled LP released last spring.
On recent efforts, Tobias expands his signature ambient flow with a more distinct approach, embracing trip-hop, jazz, and soul for a sound that’s fresh and fully realized. The two-part single “Speak” is a prime example.
“100years” is one of his most well received tracks to date, a surreal six-minute expanse of melancholy guitar chords and lush, wordless vocals. Like “Speak,” the single segues into another section, briefly teasing a whole sonic realm.
Beyond his solo output, Tobias has made a name for himself as rap/trap producer. He produced a track for Babyglock (featured on Show Me The Body‘s new Corpus mixtape) and co-produced the SHADOW STORIES EP by Lower East Side’s TRiPPJONES. He also appears to be featuring rappers/vocalists on new original material, as shown by his newest single “Comes From The Heart.” The track, featuring Chip Skylark and Nota Roja, will be included on a forthcoming full-length project.
Tobias also has a collaborative project dropping in the near future with rising New York rapper Estiee. Here’s the first single from that forthcoming tape.
