Life is full of ups and downs, but somehow, someway, it’ll all work out in the end. Mikky Ekko is a fond believer of this ideology, although the opening line of newest single may suggest otherwise. With a gentle guitar strumming in the background, Ekko woefully coos “Smile, the worst is yet to come.” But the pessimism stops there. When the minute mark rolls around, the entire tone of the song changes from pain and heartbreak to courage and elation. As he breaks free of his shackles, the singer soars over an uplifting beat with the fearlessness of a man who has nothing (or everything) to lose. It might seem cliché, but “Smile” is a storming pop anthem that reminds us all to look on the bright side, for better days are just around the corner. And that’s a message I think we can all get on board with.
“Smile” will appear on Mikky Ekko’s debut album, Time, which will be released this fall via RCA Records. It will feature production from Dave Sitek, Jeff Bhasker, Stargate, Clams Casino, Benny Blanco, and many others. If you’d like, you can watch the singer perform a couple of songs from his new album after the jump.
