Oscar Key Sung (Oscar Slorach-Thorn), a singer/songwriter/producer from Melbourne, first appeared on my radar when his brilliant yet understated track “WIMLTM” began making its rounds on the internet eight months ago. Key Sung generates a beautifully haunting combination of sounds, balancing a busy melody with layers of slow, soulful vocals, swelling synths, and laid-back beats. He laces the track together with his smooth production, artfully guiding it away from cacophony.
Though he had previously been involved with the R&B/pop duo Oscar + Martin, the success of “WIMLTM” paved the way for Key Sung to embark on his own. His new track “It’s Coming” showcases the monumental strides he’s made since the release of “WIMLTM” and hints at even greater songs to come. His refined production techniques, emotive crooning, and darkly romantic lyrics have evoked comparisons to artists like Jai Paul and The Weeknd, signifying a departure from the repetitive nature of his earlier work and confirming Key Sung’s ability as a solo artist.
In addition to “It’s Coming,” Key Sung also released a cover of Miguel’s song “Sure Thing.” Both tracks can be downloaded for free on Key Sung’s Bandcamp page [here].
