Since signing to Black Butter Records, Pablo Nouvelle has recruited a bevy of impressionable soul singers. So far, we’ve seen the Swiss producer rub shoulders with ALX, Tulliae and Fiona Daniel. But with his newest collaborator, Lulu James, he may have just found his soulmate; at the very least, a kindred spirit. Together, these two are a match made in heaven. With “Finding You,” Nouvelle‘s beautiful arranged production serves as the perfect backdrop to James‘ soft and sullen whispers.
As he has done countless times before, Nouvelle straddles the line between electronic-pop and jazz. At first glance, his productions seem simple and cathartic, but upon further inspection, the complexities of his music become much more apparent. In “Finding You,” a staggered, but elegant set of piano chords trail the beat throughout the first minute. But when that minute mark finally hits, Nouvelle allows those lurching minor chords to flourish in the background, while Mrs. James does her own thing up front.
