If Local Natives and Rufus Wainwright had an illegitimate love child, it might sound a little something like My Darling Fury. Hailing from Richmond, VA, the band is comprised of Todd Matthews (Bass, Production, Strings), Danny Reyes (Vocals), Clark Fraley (Guitar) and Joel Hollister (Drums). With a sound equally as strange as their name, the band walk the proverbial line somewhere between electronic, folk, pop and rock. Despite his background as a classically-trained musician, Matthews uses a wide variety of elements from each genre to create his own disparate sound.
On new single “Aches” (premiering below), the musician’s work comes alive with a little help from lead-singer Danny Reyes. His voice as his instrument, Reyes sings of love and dispair over a militaristic drum beat and his own angelic harmonies. When the song eventually reaches its climax, Reyes’ voice shines like a beam of light through the chaos, revealing his operatic roots. It’s a raw, almost awe-inspiring moment that caps off this beautifully written ballad.
