Progressive jazz bop “Dream” is only the second solo single to be shared from Richmond pianist and singer-songwriter Calvin Brown, but he’s already one of our favorite new underground jazz acts. We’re thrilled to premiere the new track, which puts a modern, international touch on jazz by way of Kamasi Washington and Hiatus Kaiyote. “Dream” was recorded by Butcher Brown‘s DJ Harrison (who recently worked with Jack White) and features trumpet player Marcus Tenney (Foxygen, NO BS! Brass Band, Butcher Brown).
Brown, who performs as Calvin Presents, features his own voice on the track with background vocals from RVA-native Sam Reed. The dynamic contrast between the challenging form of the music and the earnest simplicity of it lyrics recalls the sultry R&B-pop of Braxton Cook and Kendrick Lamar collaborator Terrance Martin. Calvin Presents delivers all the goods with a sleek, experienced swag that feels definitively old school. From the synth sounds he uses to the classic sound of his vocal harmonies, everything is a joyful echo of the seventies. Listen.
